Grabbity vogue-ing for the camera, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

This is a picture of our new little kitteh, Grabbity. She’s a little over 10 weeks old in this picture, and she’s a glorious bundle of cuteness and energy. She’s currently bombing around our flat and playing with everything that isn’t nailed down. She’s settled in at the flat so well.

Right now, she’s trying to climb Suw while she types away on her computer. We’re overwhelmed by her cuteness, and I apologise if the blog gets a little kitten heavy in the near future.

When the Underground won’t do, Suw takes the Tardis, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

We had to get back to our north London flat from BBC’s Television Centre. We couldn’t face the hour-long journey on the Underground so the Beeb kindly loaned us the Tardis. Fingers crossed that we end up in Holloway in the 21st Century and not some barren planet centuries in the future or centuries ago in the midst of a medieval battle. Fingers crossed. We might have to call the Doctor.

The Great London Blizzard of ‘09, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

I was shutter-bugging on my way into work today. Public transport in London wasn’t transporting much of the public due to the ‘extreme weather event’ or what one more used to snow might call a good few inches of the white stuff. Due to the aforementioned extreme weather, I walked to work. The weather seemed to have got the coots in the canal a little flustered and they were thrashing about or in this case skipping across the water.

Christmas lights of a whole other kind, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

Suw’s father was possibly a bit enthusiastic with the brandy on our Christmas pudding (a very moist English fruit cake for my countrymen who might be impossibly confused about the idea of setting a pudding alight). When I flambĂ© things, the flames usually die down after only a short while, leaving the dessert warmed but otherwise unaffected. This poor pud went on flaming for about five minutes, setting some of the raisins on fire, hence the bright orange jet on the side. The result was a bit of charcoal taste, like when marshmallow toasting turns the white globs of fluff into sugary infernos.

I shouldn’t complain too much because at least it allowed me to get some great action shots.

Snow at home in Illinois, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

I haven’t felt very much in a holiday mood for the last few years. It might have something to do with the fact that they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in England, which is a shame. But I am sure that it also has something to do with the fact that I’m used to snow and some proper wintry weather, growing up west of Chicago.

Coming home to celebrate Thanksgiving helped and now a blanket of snow has really done the trick. We’ve got a fire burning in our wood burning stove, and the house is snug and warm. The fire is crackling. I’m more in a holiday mood than I’ve been in years. I’m also more relaxed. I’m not thinking about work or much of anything right now. Suw and I want to spend the rest of the winter here. Sigh. If only we could.

“Let’s roll up our sleeves and get back to work for our country. “, originally uploaded by Nastassia A. Davis.

One of the things that has really struck me about the Obama campaign is how people are not waiting for the government to do something for them but are actually inspired to do something for their country. It will be fascinating to see how this plays out in the next year as the economy drifts downward. But the president-elect, even before he takes office is already trying to do what he did during the campaign, which is to funnel people’s enthusiasm into action. If he is successfu, we might just make it through this economic meltdown and come out the other side even better than before.

Storefront in Washington DC

Brilliant storefront in Washington DC. Only in Washington would you have such elaborate storefront making a political statement.

Halloween early in West Hollywood, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

The Ministry song “Everyday is Halloween” keeps rolling through my head here in Hollywood. The eccentricity of dress tops even that of London. London has a hipster uniform, but here in Hollywood, it seems like one giant fancy dress (costume) party. I was walking down the street when I saw four or five identically wrapped micro-cars all touting a new show “Starter Wife”, and out of them popped eight identically wrapped women.

As for a Starter Wife, I plan to stick with my wife for the rest of our lives thank you very much. The superficiality of LA has always grated on me. It’s like being in back in high school except the people are old enough that you would have thought they would have grown out of it. I guess not.

St Paul’s Cathedral in London, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

It’s days like this and views like this that remind that London isn’t all stress and crowds. Beautiful sun and puffy clouds were the wonderful backdrop to the sun shining on the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

Aspens in the snow in the Gila Wilderness, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

I’m historically lazy about getting film developed, which I guess is why I love digital. I just got around to developing some film I shot on a walk through the Gila Wilderness in early December 2006. It was going to be cold so I bought disposable cameras. I know from experience that cold kills the lithium ion batteries used in digital cameras. When Suw and I went to Colorado in September, even though it was just chilly at night, not actually what I would term as cold, I still slept with my camera batteries to keep them warm at night. It made a huge difference. My friend Alain watched with horror as the cold – well below freezing drained his batteries in hours.

One of the disposable cameras I took was a Kodak C-41 black and white camera, which unfortunately doesn’t appear to be available in the UK. C-41 black and white film doesn’t require special processing. You can use it the standard labs common in most shops, and this film was developed with a one-hour batch processor at a high street snap shop. I was deeply impressed with the results. It captured the snow and scenes so well and managed to work in some extreme conditions both in terms of temperatures and in terms of light. My only regret is that with gloved hands, my finger often found its way into the shots. The viewfinder only lets you frame the image, not check to see if your finger was in it.

I’ll definitely have to consider shooting more with black and white film or even see how my digital works in black and white mode. Any suggestions on good digital cameras for B&W? I’m also going to shoot more with my Argus C-3. It’s not for action shots, but it has brilliant optics. Now, if I only I can break my bad habit of not developing film.
