I’ve now lived in two capital cities for more than a decade. They are strange places. Most people there can’t conceive of how the rest of the world isn’t as obsessed about politics as they are. Not just that, but most of them think the social drama that plays out around politics is infinitely fascinating rather than what most people see it as, tediously juvenile. Strip away the power and the real impact that some of this soap opera has, and it really bears a striking resemblance to angst-y teenage self-obsession. It’s really best to maintain a healthy distance, which is why most people do.

This Family Guy parody isn’t just poking fun at political cartoons, it’s also poking fun at the bubble mentality of Capitol Hill in Washington and the Westminster Village in London. Unfortunately, I’ve lived in the bubbles so long, I might be one of the few people who will actually laugh at it. I think I need a new injection of perspective. Trip to the countryside anyone?

Kitteh Couture

After an entirely too busy summer, things are settling down a bit so I’m just really busy instead of so-busy-that-I-don’t-actually-have-any-time-to-do-anything-but-work busy. One of the big changes in the life of the Charman-Anderson household is that we’re the proud parents of two kittens, who as of today are four months old.

Friends of our ours were adopted by a cat. Sookie was a bit on the big side, and when they took her to the vet for a check up, he offered his congratulations. They were going to be kittie parents. We waited for months as we got updates on Sookie’s pregnancy progress, and we knew it was meant to be when eight kittens were born on my birthday.

We originally were only going to adopt one, and Suw wanted a girl. We brought Grabbity home when she was just 10 weeks old. She was an achingly cute little ball of fluff. Grabbity is a portmanteau of grab and gravtiy. Even before we brought her home, if things fell, we would say: Grabbity did it!

Shortly after we brought Grabbity home, one of other people who were going to adopt had second thoughts. The kitten had a slight heart murmur, and the prospective kittie parent was worried about what that meant for the future. We stepped in and said that we’d take another. We had been thinking about it for a while anyway because we thought Grabbity would enjoy the company. Two weeks after we brought Grabbity home, we brought her brother, Sir Izacat Mewton, home. We named him Sir Izacat Mewton because as everyone knows Mewton discovered Grabbity.

They are, of course, getting into all kinds of mischief. They have discovered drawers now.

This is a picture of our new little kitteh, Grabbity. She’s a little over 10 weeks old in this picture, and she’s a glorious bundle of cuteness and energy. She’s currently bombing around our flat and playing with everything that isn’t nailed down. She’s settled in at the flat so well.

Right now, she’s trying to climb Suw while she types away on her computer. We’re overwhelmed by her cuteness, and I apologise if the blog gets a little kitten heavy in the near future.

When the Underground won’t do, Suw takes the Tardis, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

We had to get back to our north London flat from BBC’s Television Centre. We couldn’t face the hour-long journey on the Underground so the Beeb kindly loaned us the Tardis. Fingers crossed that we end up in Holloway in the 21st Century and not some barren planet centuries in the future or centuries ago in the midst of a medieval battle. Fingers crossed. We might have to call the Doctor.

More snow in north London, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

It doesn’t look like this will cause too much (more) travel chaos in London, but outside of the Big Smoke, it looks like it’s going to shut down the country yet again. I love it. I can’t really believe that some local authorities are running out of grit after only a few days of this. I guess it shows how rare this..

The Great London Blizzard of ‘09, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

I was shutter-bugging on my way into work today. Public transport in London wasn’t transporting much of the public due to the ‘extreme weather event’ or what one more used to snow might call a good few inches of the white stuff. Due to the aforementioned extreme weather, I walked to work. The weather seemed to have got the coots in the canal a little flustered and they were thrashing about or in this case skipping across the water.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been spooked by a mouse running across the kitchen counter or once between my legs in the bathroom in the middle of the night. Up until now, I was the only person to see the mouse. Suw had never seen or heard it, just heard me freak out as the mouse startled me.

Suw and I just got back from a week walking through the Welsh marches, and finally after weeks, the mouse has revealed itself to her. Now what to do with it? Well, this is definitely not how we’re going to go about it. Pest control advice from Failblog.

Irony of the British housing crash, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

The number of mortgages granted has plummeted. New house construction has dropped off a cliff – apart from (public) social housing. But construction workers now find work gutting shuttered estate agents. How symbolic.

April snow in London, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

This isn’t a news flash to any local, but we woke up to a blanket of snow with more coming down. When I first rolled out of bed at 8 am, it was really falling fast and furious. It actually seemed heavier and wetter than now at 11 am.

Snow is beautiful. Suw isn’t a big fan of the cold, and I survived my share of bitterly cold winters growing up west of Chicago. But I do love snow.

It is frequent enough where I grew up that people know how to cope with it, but here in London and back in Washington DC where I lived for six years, it’s too frequent for either the cities or the people to know how to cope with it. It generally leads to chaos and wailing and gnashing of teeth by the locals. It gives me a chuckle.
