Waterlow Park London, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

Suw and I went walking a few weeks ago in Waterlow Park. It’s only a short-ish walk from our flat, and the weather was absolutely lovely. The colours are just coming out, although by now, I would expect they are in full glory. Waterlow Park is next to Highgate Cemetary. Had we not been busy making our jack o’ lanterns, it would have been a great Halloween treat to tour the cemetary. There are parts of it that you can tour for free.

Jack O’ Lanterns 2007, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

Suw and I actually made our Jack O’ Lanterns a few days before Halloween this year. Suw made her own excellent pattern, while I used a pattern from Zombie Pumpkins.com. It’s a great site with lots of patterns. It took me a while to do the intricate carving, but it was well worth it. We bought one of those pumpkin carving kits, and they little saws really work. Happy Halloween.

UPDATE: Yay! Jack Skellington has been included in the 2nd Annual Best of Flickr Pumpkin Mosaic. Thanks to SoundsGood for including me.

Mushroom risotto from Exmouth Market
I walked into my favourite Italian deli up the street, Gazzano’s, only to find the queue stretching longer than than at a post office during the recent strikes. I was just about to head back dejected to the office canteen, when I thought to go up to Exmouth Market and see what was on offer. I often have a Breton galette or sometimes a veggie burrito, but this time I spotted the Sporeboys’ stand with a lovely basket of wild mushrooms and some risotto on offer. Yum.

There was only one problem with this, and that was Suw and I make mushroom risotto pretty frequently. Suw leaves me to saute the mushrooms in Amontillado sherry because it has such a lovely nutty character that really brings out the best

in the mushrooms. She makes the rice, and she’s got it down to a science. It’s pretty common for us to have this meal.

How did Sporeboys’ stand up? Well, I think they were being overly cautious with the salt. It was a little bland. As Suw pointed out, they were probably taking care not to use too much salt as it sat on a simmer for a long time. Oh well, I’ll remember to add a little extra salt to taste next time. But for a fiver, it was well worth it.

Suw Charman, my gal
See, it makes so much sense that we’re getting hitched. This is from The Alps bed and breakfast up Boulder Canyon from the Colorado city of the same name.

Skunks attack London, originally uploaded by Kevglobal.

Being possibly one of the few people working for the London media who doesn’t engage in user testing of illicit drugs and also being from a place where skunks are in fact small creatures with a big smell, my first thought at seeing this headline was of hordes of rabid black and white animals running rampant over our gritty city. Yes, it took me a second or two to switch my brain to consider that this headline, in fact, referred to highly potent marijuana that is sold in Camden just to name one place.

However, even I didn’t realise the darker side to this story, which was revealed on the authoritative news site – Shitegeist.

Dramatic new evidence of the dangers of rogue jihadi animals emerged today as government scientists warned that a most harmful “stink” is flooding our streets.  … An un-named source at the Ministry of Baseless Scaremongering said that a lethal ‘Al Qaeda skunk’ (acting on orders from Osama Bin Laden’s cat) was responsible for flooding large parts of the Whitechapel area, after meddling with an unknown number of sewerage facilities and getting several members of the Thames Barrier maintenance crew monged on Grade A grass.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. It’s your civic duty.
